Introduction
Clyk is an ecological friendly I.T. service company that wants to give back to the environment. Their motto ‘Better Every Environment’ not only refers to nature it seamlessly extends to their business clients. Their knowledge and expertise will help a business grow, just like the 100 trees we plant to celebrate all successes. This innovative, collaborative, and ethical company work to better every environment, not only for this century but for the next.
At the time of the Energy Efficiency Review, the company had recently purchased a 130m2 steel-frame and clad office unit in Newcastle-under-Lyme and were yet to fully occupy it, although they had undertaken some replacement lighting works.
LCBEP Recommendation
Specialist low carbon consultant, Pro Enviro Ltd., visited the premises in September 2022 to undertake a free LCBEP energy efficiency review that looked at all aspects of the business. They made two recommendations that would reduce both the cost and levels of greenhouse gas emissions.
1)Installation of LED lighting
At the time of the site visit, most of the lighting across the site comprised fluorescent fittings and could all be replaced with more efficient LED equivalents.
The LED lamps should have a life span of a minimum 30,000 hours in comparison to the current lighting system, which is estimated to have a life span of 15,000 hours, therefore reducing the maintenance costs.
The table below shows the potential annual savings from installation of LED lighting.
Overall System | kW Power | Annual kWh Consumption | Annual Cost | Annual CO2e |
Current System | 4.03 | 13,098 | £6,922 | 3.71 |
Recommended System | 1.12 | 3,627 | £1,917 | 1.03 |
Annual kWh Saving | Annual Cost Saving | Annual CO2e Saving |
9,471 | £5,005 | 2.68 |
“We are truly grateful to SBEN providing us with this grant. Their support will enable us to make a positive impact on the environment while also improving our business operations. We are committed to sustainability and reducing our impact on the planet, and this grant allowed us to take a significant step in that direction”.
2)Installation of Solar PV
During the review, it became apparent that the company was interested in the potential cost and benefits of installing a Solar Photovoltaic array on the roof of the building and they were advised that a full solar PV survey would be required to determine the cost benefit of any solar PV system that could be installed on the roof.
However, initial estimates indicated that a solar array of 32 x 350W polycrystalline PV modules could be installed on the available barn to create a 11.2 kWp photovoltaic system. Although the performance of any solar system cannot be guaranted with certainty due to the variability of the amount of sunlight from year to year, the calculation of estimated generation was based on industry standard methodologies.
The estimated quantity of energy generated by the recommended array was 8,698 kWh per annum and it was estimated that the site would use 70% of the energy generated.
The anticipated savings from the generation of energy used on site in the first year was £3,214, 1.72 tCO2e and 6,082 kWh.
LCBEP Grant
The company successfully applied for a grant to install both LED lighting and a solar PV array and received their grant of £7,248.19 in February 2023.
Taking into consideration their total project costs of £15,460 (£12,080.32 of which were eligible for a grant), the company’s contribution of £8,211.81 and their estimated annual savings of £8,402, their project payment period is calculated as under one year!
