People in England who can’t work from home are now being encouraged to return to their workplaces. However, they are being advised to avoid using public transport if possible.
Lots of us have been taking our daily exercise, getting out for a walk and dusting off old bikes – we’d like to encourage businesses and individuals to not to jump in the car to get back to work but where possible to walk and cycle to work – this will help keep the improved air quality we have seen during the crisis, minimise carbon emissions, save money and be great for health and wellbeing.
How can businesses help their employees with cycling?
[1] Have a look at cycling routes available in your area:
For many the first option will be Google Maps, but you could also try:
- Maps for the Staffordshire area are available on the Staffordshire County Council website
[2] Help to buy a bike
The Cycle to Work scheme is designed to help save money on a new work bike and spread the cost of the bike over monthly tax-free instalments through your employer. The scheme can save between 25% and 39% on the cost of a new bike or an electric bike. More information below.
- The Government’s Cycle to work scheme implementation guidance for employers
- Sustrans’ explanation of the scheme.
- Another source of information is to be found at https://www.cyclescheme.co.uk/
[3] Provide secure storage for employees bikes while they are at work, think about showers, changing facilities and lockers
